Nineteen

Reznick drove through the small towns of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. He was taking the long way home. But he was now driving a Buick SUV.

He had decided, once he’d left in Ray Diaz’s vehicle, that a quick switch might be in order. Ray was hopefully laying down a false trail for the Feds.

Reznick had driven to the outskirts of Pittsfield when he saw a near-deserted open-air parking lot. He spotted an old Buick SUV. It was then that he decided to switch again. He had been concerned that if Diaz had been stopped not far from the city, they would soon put out an alert for any vehicle in his name.

Reznick was relieved to finally get out of the city driving on US-7, headed north in the direction of Bennington. He wasn’t far from Vermont. But he didn’t want to take a route straight as the crow flew. He took a long detour instead.

He headed west on NY-2 and cut through the Taconic Ridge State Forest. Mile after mile of winding road through the heavily wooded area of the Berkshires. Rolling hills and light traffic, just the occasional passing car or truck for company.

The sky began to darken, then the rain began to fall.

Reznick drove on through the downpour, wipers sluicing away the water from the windshield. He wondered if he should call Trevelle to say he was on his way. But he wanted to make sure the coast was clear before he put himself on anyone’s radar.

He headed toward Williamstown on the northwest edge of Massachusetts. It was the home of the private liberal arts school Williams College. He knew the area quite well, having visited Lauren when she was at Bennington. They often traveled into Williamstown for a meal or a drink.

Reznick thought of Lauren. He thought of what had happened in his life over the last few days. She would be shocked to the core. He thought of her, working for the CIA on the other side of the world. He couldn’t help but worry. It was in his nature as a father. But he also knew she was more than capable. And she wasn’t a risk-taker like he was. In a way, he was glad that she was out of the FBI. He knew the fallout for her, career-wise, of his latest escapade would have been immense.

The rain fell heavier as he drove on into the night.

Reznick’s one saving grace was that Lauren would be unaware of what had transpired. Hopefully. Maybe Meyerstein had texted her. He couldn’t rule that out. Maybe called her in Jakarta. But as far as Reznick knew, Lauren was oblivious.

It was plain to see that he had been released by the Feds, maybe after Meyerstein’s intervention, in the genuine hope of tracking him back to Kevin Chang. It would have snared all of them at once if their plan had worked.

As it stood, it wouldn’t be long until the FBI realized he had given them the slip. And they would be pulling in all the intelligence agencies in the hunt for him.
